About Siouxland SnoTrackers
Siouxland SnoTrackers is a snowmobile club based in Brandon, South Dakota, established in 1969. The organization describes itself as family-oriented and focuses on promoting and preserving the sport of snowmobiling in the Siouxland region. A Hundred Miles Across Three Counties
The SnoTrackers trail system runs across three counties in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, which makes it one of the larger club maintained networks in the eastern half of the state.
Every mile of it depends on volunteers and on landowners who allow the trail across their ground. Club members sign the trail each fall, groom it through the winter and pull the signs in spring, the same cycle every club in the region works through.
Because these trails sit on farm ground rather than public land, they open only when there is enough snow to groom without damaging the surface underneath. South Dakota’s statewide trail season runs December 15 through March 31, with Game, Fish and Parks and the South Dakota Snowmobile Association both publishing conditions.
Founded in 1969
The club dates to 1969, the same year the South Dakota Snowmobile Association was founded, which puts it among the state’s original snowmobile clubs. Nearly sixty years on, it is still running.
It is also growing. The club took the state association’s award for the largest percentage increase in membership during a recent season, which for a volunteer organization in a sport that depends on unpredictable snow is a real achievement.
The SnoTrackers have hosted the South Dakota Snowmobile Association annual convention in Sioux Falls as well, which brings clubs from across the state together for awards, elections and the business of keeping trails open.
Joining the Club
The club is open to newcomers and says so plainly. Whether you are new to the area and looking for people to ride with, or a local with an interest in snowmobiling, the SnoTrackers are looking for members.
Membership supports both the club and the South Dakota Snowmobile Association, which works with Game, Fish and Parks and with lawmakers in Pierre to secure trail funding and protect riding access. Association members also receive the Sno-Plainsman newsletter.
During fall and winter the club meets monthly to plan the season. Meeting details and ride announcements are posted through the club website and its Facebook page.
Riding Around Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota and sits at the junction of I-29 and I-90, which makes this one of the more accessible club trail systems in the region.
It is not the only one nearby either. Trailbusters maintains 73 miles of trail just south toward Beresford, and Dakota Drifters covers more than 100 miles around Brookings to the north. Between the three clubs, the southeastern corner of the state carries a substantial amount of groomed trail in a good snow year.
